CRAIG FOLLOWS IN HIS GRANDFATHERS FOOTSTEPS

Craig White is following the same route as his late grandfather Teddy White with Warrington Wolves.

Craig who signed a contract with the Wolves in 2004 has still kept his roots at heart and still supports Rylands. His late grandfather Ted played for Warrington during the glory years in the 1950s, and his greatest achievement was being involved in the 1954 epic challenge cup final when Warrington drew with Halifax at Wembley, and then the replay was played at Bradford?s, odsal stadium attracting a world record crowd of 102,569, that?s what was recorded although the estimated crowd was in the region Of 120, 000, many more were thought to have climbed walls and barriers to gain access to the game.
Craig joined the club when he was 9 years old, and developing through the age groups, as the team progressed certain players began to mature into very useful Rugby players and Craig has the honour of being the first player to sign a professional contract from Rylands Sharks. Its to his own dedication to his team mates and the game that Craig quite rightly gets the full backing of Rylands ARLFC.

THAT'S MY BOY!
YOUNG Craig White is hoping to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and become one of the greats of Rugby League.

The Orford 10-year-old plays as stand off for the Rylands Sharks and has been picked to play for South Lancashire on May 17, just 18 months after he first took up the sport.

No one would have been prouder of the youngster's achievements than his grandfather Ted White, who played second row for Warrington RLFC in their 1950s heyday.

Ted died in November 1994, aged 64, but his widow Doreen remains as passionate as ever about the game.

She told the GUARDIAN: "Craig hasn't been playing long but he's really taken to it. All he talks about is being a pro player when he's older.

"He was only little when Ted died but he remembers him very well and he says granddad is up there watching him while he's playing."

Ted played alongside the great try machine Brian Bevan in the side that won the triple of championship, Challenge Cup and Lancashire League in 1953/4.

He only missed out in the great Odsal replay final of 1954, when Warrington beat Halifax 8-4 to lift the Challenge Cup in front of 102,000 spectators, because he had broken his leg in the previous round.

Doreen said: "He played in every round up to the semi against Leeds when he broke his leg. They had him running up and down the side of the pitch at Wembley before the final but he just wasn't fit.

"It was a big disappointment for him not to play but we still went along to Odsal with everyone else."

Ted made a total of 135 appearances between 1952 and 1959 for Warrington and scored 18 tries.

Craig will make his debut for South Lancashire against North Lancashire at Bennett's Rec, Woolston, on May 17.
