Rylands 2005 - 06.

Adlington Rangers 20 - 41 Rylands .

Ryland's quest for a quick return to the Premier Division started in fine style with a convincing win at Adlington. From the moment Anthony Braide put a pass round the back of the Adlington defence for Iain Ratcliffe to run on to Rylands were in complete control. The lead was quickly doubled when a loose ball was snapped up by Craig Rigby and he raced 50 meters unopposed, Braide converted both. A brace of spectacular tries from Danny Hoyland extended

Ryland's lead after Adlington had threatened a comeback with two tries of their own to give a half time score of 10-22 Two minutes after the restart the game was put beyond the home side when Lee Caldwell went in under the sticks after great work from Carl Lloyd,

Adlington again threatened a comeback but Mark Martin put pay to that by picking the ball up at the base of the scrum in his own 20 and racing the length of the pitch for a tremendous try. Craig Rigby grabbed his second try after good work by Peter Leonard who finished the scoring with a drop goal to add to his 4 conversions. Best for Rylands were Captain Mike Ward and the front row of Andy Smith Chris Clayson and Iain Ratcliffe.

Rylands 34 - 18 Folly Lane.

A penalty count of 15-4 against Rylands could not stop them recording their
second victory on the trot in this NWC Division 1 encounter. Folly Lane started
brightly with a try in the opening minutes but Rylands responded immediately
with a try from Carl Lloyd after good work by Peter Leonard and Anthony Braide.

Folly Lane opened up a 4 point lead with two penalties, but Rylands learnt
their lesson and when they stamped out the ill-discipline and concentrated
on their rugby it was breathtaking, they scored 4 unanswered tries in a twelve
minute purple patch just before half time with Andy Pucill, Andy Matthews
and Darren Shaw twice the recipients.

Poor defending after the break allowed Folly to get within 10 points but
that was as close as they got as Carl Lloyd went in for his second try created
by Man of the Match Chris Clayson and a Mark Martin try created by the boot
of Leonard who added three conversions to give Rylands a comfortable 34-18
success.

Rylands 31 - 18 Latchford.

An opening fifteen minutes of error free rugby from Rylands saw them take an early 16-0 lead an Andy Brown individual effort was followed by tries from Andy Smith and Jonny Walker both created by Peter Leonard who converted two of the tries.

Latchford responded in typical fashion with three tries in the final ten minutes of the half two from Ryan Barnes and one from John Williams all converted by Gavin Bishop to give Latchford a narrow 16-18 HT lead. The second half was all Rylands though as the strong running Andy Pucill turned provider for Tony Berry and the impressive Neil Evans to put Rylands into a comfortable 30-18 lead Leonard added a late drop goal to give a final
score of 31-18. Best for Rylands were Carl Lloyd, Neil Evans, Ian Ward, Andy
Smith and Andy Pucill for Latchford Gavin Bishop was the star man closely
followed by Matt Patterson and Matt Drinkwater.

Lancashire Cup Open Age

Rylands 50 - 4 Oldham st Annes

Rylands ran in 10 tries as they stormed into the Lancashire Cup 3rd round. Andy Brown burst through 4 would be tacklers on 5 minutes to open the floodgates and tries then came at regular intervals with Danny Hoyland helping himself to 4 tries and Carl Llyod 3 before Paul Flannery scored the 9th try and Brown finished how the game started by scoring the last . Peter Leonard landed 5 conversions in a tremendous 80 minute display by a confident Rylands side. Rylands 35 - 16 Roose Poineers.

3 tries inthe opening 18 minutes from Kyle Hillman, Jonny Walker and Mark Forster 1
converted by Peter Leonard gave Rylands an early start 14-0 lead, Injuries to 4 key players who could not return to the fray
disrupted Rylands play and Roose were able to capitalise and reduce the deficiet at half time to 14-10. The 2nd half saw Rylands score within 3 minutes when Andy Pucill powered over he then turned provider for Andy Brown to score under the sticks, Leonard converted both. Roose responded with their own convered try Before the boot of Leonard put Rylands 29-16 up with a penalty and a drop goal to
effectively seal the game.
Mark Foerster got his second try before the end after some slick passing and Leonard booted over the touchline conversion to seal the win.

Rylands 14 v 12 Bold Miners.

Rylands progressed to the Lancashire Cup quarter finalswhere they will entertain Bank Quay Bulls after a 14-12 win over Premier Division side Bold Miners in atrocious conditions both sides entertained the large crowd with some attractive rugby and it was Rylands who were first on the score sheet when Andy Brown capitalised on a Bold mistake in the opening minutes to crash over by the posts, Peter Leonard converted to give Rylands an early 6-0 lead.
Andy Pucill was harshly sin binned in the 28th minute and Bold capitalised immediately with a converted try to level the scores 6-6 at half time.
After the break Rylands regained the lead with a Danny Hoyland try but Bold responded
midway through the half with a converted try from Darren Anders to give Bold the lead
for the first time at 10-12.
Rylands then had 2 perfectly good tries from Jamie Evans ruled out for apparent offside but they would not be denied and with 7 minutes remaining full back Carl Lloyd linked into the backline to grab the winning score.

Rylands 19 v 18 Hindley.

Rylands made hard work of disposing of a stubborn Hindley side who never gave up for the full 80 minutes. After dominating the opening 10 minutes and bombing four good scoring opportunaties. Rylands fell behind to a Hindley breakaway converted try.
Andy Pucil levelled matters with a strong run taking three would be tacklers over the line with him Peter Leonard converted and then created space out wide for Danny Hoyland to score.
Man of the Match Chris Clayson then threw a dummy and crashed over by the sticks Leonard converted both to give Rylands an 18 -6 half time lead
The second half was about strong defence as both sides strived for an opening and for 38 minutes it was stalemate until Leonard added a drop goal to give Rylands a 19-6 lead.
Rylands relaxed at this point and Hindley capitalised scoring 2 late converted tries to give a final score 19-18 which did not reflect Rylands dominance of the game.

Rylands 46 v 22 Ulverston

Rylands continued their unbeaten League campaign with an 8 try demolition of closest challengers Ulverston in this NWC Division 1 encounter. Peter Leonard created 3 first half tries for Craig Rigby, Andy Pucill and Tony Berry before Ulverston responded with 2 tries of their own to go in leading 16-10 the second period saw Rylands take complete control with Man of the Match; Kyle Hillman crossing for 3 welltaken tries on the back of some tremendous go forward rugby, Pucill and Ian Ward completed the try scoring and Peter Leonard knocked over 7 conversions to complete the rout

Rylands 38 - 0 Adlington.

Rylands remain unbeaten in NWC Div 1 with a impressive win over a spirited
Adlington side,Rylands dominated this top of the table clash from start to
finish,opening tries from poole and lloyd set the Gorsey Lane outfit on
there way,Pucill and Matthews kept the Adlington forwards busy and made big
gaps for Man Of The Match Leonard to exploit.The second half saw one of the
best tries seen at Rylands for years with the backs offloading five times to
put the in form Flannery in for his second of the
day.Ward,Clayson,Braide,also impressed for Rylands.

Hindley 34 v Rylands 14

A poor opening 40 minutes from Rylands saw them go 18-0 down when three errors
were capitalised on by Hindley.
The second period was no better as Hindley got the rub of the green with
a kick through that bounced kindly for them to go 24-0 up.
Rylands responded with tries from Andy Brown, Danny Hoyland and Mike Lee
one converted by Peter Leonard to get Rylands back in the game at 24-14
As Rylands chased the game with Andy Pucill, Jonny Walker and Neil Evans
involved in all of Rylands good work Hindley broke out from defence to score
two late tries and seal a 34-14 win

RYLANDS 10 v WIGAN ST PATRICKS 6
Rylands got back to winning ways but had to do it the hard way with a gutsy
performance against Pats?
Trailing 2-0 Rylands were reduced to 12 men after the dismissal of scrum
half Peter Leonard, the 12 men held out until the stroke of half time when
Pats? made the extra man tell creating an overlap for the winger to give
them a 6-0 half time advantage.
In the second half Rylands controlled the ball much better dominating possession
and territory resulting in an unconverted try for Anthony Poole.
The try gave Rylands confidence and soon after Man of the Match Ian Ward
created a gap for Tony Berry to plunge over for a try which he converted
to give Rylands a 10-6 lead.
The 12 men had to work hard in the last 20 minutes to hold on to their lead,
and they did with some tremendous defence from Neil Evans, Paul Flannery
and Andy Pucill, while Anthony Braide and Mark Forster made valuable meters
each time they got the ball to earn Rylands a deserved victory and returned
them to the top of NWC Division 1.

Rylands 10 v 15 East Leeds.

Rylands pushed National Conference 1 side East Leeds all the way in a pulsating
GMB BARLA National Cup 3rd Round game at Gorsey Lane.
The visitors got off to a flyer taking an early 8-0 lead thanks to a converted
try and a penalty, but Rylands responded on the stroke of half time when
Carl Lloyd sent in Danny Hoyland to give a 4-8 half time scoreline.
Intense Rylands pressure went unrewarded as East Leeds broke out from defence
to extend their lead to 4-14 with a converted try. As Leeds gained confidence
a stray pass was intercepted by Anthony Poole and he went under the sticks
for a well taken try converted by Peter Leonard to bring Rylands back within
4 points with 15 minutes remaining.
The boot of Leonard caused Leeds problems all afternoon as they were constantly
camped in their own 20 by good kick chases.
Two Jamie Evans tries for Rylands were disallowed and with a penalty count
of 23 to 9 going against Rylands and two players sent to the bin they were
always going to be up against it. A last minute drop goal sealed their fate
and a superb team performance went unrewarded.

ULVERSTON 12 v 30 RYLANDS

Rylands got back to winning ways with a dominant display over Ulverston.
After a slow start where Ulverston opened up 6-0 advantage Rylands took control with
Andy Smith, Dave Todd and Andy Pucill outstanding in attack and defence. Ian Ward got Rylands on level terms with a well worked try created by Chris Clayson which substitute Leonard converted. Leonard then created a try for the hard working Jonny Walker which he converted to give Rylands a 12-6 half time advantage.
The second period saw Rylands control possession much better and they were tries from Danny Hoyland, Carl Lloyd and a second for Ian Wardwith Leonard adding the extras. Ulverston scored a late try which their effects deserved but Rylands enjoyed their first away victory since the opening game of the season .

Rylands 17 v 16 Oldham st Annes

Rylands exchanged places at the top of the NWC Division 1 with leaders Oldham
St Anne?s after an exhilarating 17-16 victory thanks to a last minute drop
goal from Peter Leonard.
Oldham started the stronger with an opening penalty and an unconverted try
in the corner but Rylands responded with a Danny Hoyland try from a Leonard
kick. Minutes later another Leonard kick caused confusion in the Oldham defence
and Ian Ward gathered the ball and fed the supporting Leonard who went under
the posts, he added the extras and at Half time Rylands led 10-6
Oldham had tremendous field position in the opening 10 minutes of the half
and they made it tell as they raced in under the posts for a converted try
to lead 12-10.
Jonny Walker was having a tremendous game in the centres for Rylands and
it was from one of his breaks that Rylands edged into the lead again with
Tony Berry giving the final pass to the supporting Leonard who touched down
by the posts and convert to give Rylands a 4 point advantage.
A heavy penalty count against Rylands put themselves under pressure and Oldham
took advantage scoring two penalties to tie the scores at 16 ? 16
With only minutes left it looked like the points would be shared until a
superb off load from Darren Shaw on the half way line fed the supporting
Jeff Robinson who was tackled just short of the line, the ball was played
quickly and fed to Leonard was in position to knock over the 1 pointer and
send the large Gorsey Lane crowd into raptures.

Wigan St Patrick's 24 v 16 Rylands

Rylands missed the chance to open up a gap at the top of NWC Division 1 with
a 24-16 reverse at Wigan.
Rylands lossed the game in the opening 20 minutes when they found themselves
16-0 down, a superb tackle from Ian Ward dislodged the ball from the Wigan
attack and Tony Berry pounced on the loose ball to get Rylands back in the
game Chris Forster added the extras. A further try from Wigan just before
the break gave them a 20-6 advantage a passionate half time team talk from
former Salford flyer and assistant coach Tex Evans lifted the troops and
Rylands dominated the opening half hour of the second period with tries from
Carl Lloyd and Danny Hoyland. Hoyland converting one to bring Rylands within
4 points.
Some dubious referee calls restricted the Rylands comeback and it was Wigan
who had the final word with a try 5 minutes from time to seal the win. Best
for Rylands in a spirited display were Ian Ward, Carl Lloyd and Tony Berry.

Roose 10 v Rylands 24

Roose opened the scoring with a penalty goal after 2 minutes but after that
it was Rylands all the way. Chris Clayson got Rylands first try from close
range then a Chris Forster kick was pounced on by Carl Lloyd converted by
Forster to give them a 2-10 lead. A 50 metre break by the impressive Jonny
Walker was finished off by Danny Hoyland and Rylands led 2-14 at half time.
Strong Rylands defence led by Mark Forster held the home team at bay and
when Rylands got possession Chris Forster bamboozled the Roose defence to
send in Jonny Walker for a deserved try Forster converting to give Rylands
a 2-20 advantage, Andy Pucill sent over Tony Berry just after the hour mark
and Rylands were coasting at 2-24. Two late consolation tries from Roose
could not take the gloss off a superb team performance and one more win in
their final game at Oldam St Annes on Saturday 25th March will see them lift
the NWC Division 1 title. Best for Rylands Chris Forster, Jonny Walker and
Captain Ian Ward.

NWC Cup Rylands 18 v 10 Milnrow

Rylands progressed to the last 16 of the Northwest Counties Cup with a below par performance against lower league opposition. Rylands opened the scoring on 4 minutes when Mark Forster was first to react to his son Chris's kick, Chris added the extras to give a 6-0 advantage and everybody expected a rout but credit to Milnrow who responded with an unconverted try and the only other score of the half was Chris Forster penalty to give a half time score of 8-4..
Milnrow briefly took the lead on 48 minutes with a converted try but the introduction of Paul Flannery back after 5 weeks out had an immediate effect as he collected an inside pass from Andy Pucill to score by the posts Chris Forster converted and Rylands led 14-10 on 66 minutes a sweeping passing move from Rylands saw Man of the Match. Jonathon Smith pass the ball between his legs for Chris Forster to race in for the game clinching try.

Oldham st Annes 12 - 20 Rylands

Rylands are the North West Counties are the division 1 champions after a tremendous
20-12 win at second placed Oldham st Annes.
Rylands started strongy and in th fifth minute they force the error from Oldham and from the resulting attacking scrum Danny Hoyland queezed over in the corner Chris Forster convered superbly from the touchline and Rylands led 6-0.
Oldham responded with 2 penalties before a set move saw the Oldham defence split wide open and Andy Pucill strode through the gap for a well deserved 4 pointer. Forster added the extras to give Rylands a 12-4 lead.. 2 more Oldham penalties narrowed the gapto 12-8 at the break.
Defences from both sides were strong with no quarter asked for or given which kept the referees whistle busy. Rylands were led superbly by captain Ian Ward,player coach Mark Forsterand looseforward Tony Berry who took over kicking duties while Chris Forster was in the sin bin and landed 2 penalties to extend Rylands lead to 16-8 as Oldham lost their discipline. When Forster returned he punished Oldhams indisgressions further by adding 2 more penalties a 75th minute consolation try for Oldham gave the final score of 20-12 as the final whistle ounded the champagne corks popped and Gorsey Lane faithful celebrated in style Rylands will be aiming for a league and cup double.

Rylands 33 Widnes Ball 12

Rylands progressed to the NWC Cup Quarter Final by beating current holders
Widnes Ball at Gorsey Lane on Saturday.
Jamie Evans showed blistering speed when he won the chase to Chris Forsters
kick to grab the first try, and moments later Andy Brown added a second,
dislocating his shoulder in the process, as he carried three players over
the line, this disrupted the Rylands side allowing Ball to respond with a
try. A set move from Rylands saw Ian Ward race under the sticks but the cup
holders refused to lie down and a converted try on the stroke of half time
gave a score line of 18-10
With a strong wind at their backs Widnes Ball looked the likely winners and
opened the scoring with a penalty to close the gap to six points but in the
final 20 minutes Rylands? superior fitness told as they took complete control
scoring tries through Man of the Match Andy Pucill, a superb second from
Jamie Evans and a Chris Forster try who finished the game with a personal
haul of 15 points with 4 goals and a last minute drop goal to seal a convincing
33-12 victory

Rylands 60 v Ulverston 8
Former Warrington Wolves flyer Mark Forster scored the first and last tries
in Rylands 11 try demolition of Ulverston to book a Northwest Counties Challenge
Cup semi-final place against local rivals Latchford Albion at Gorsey Lane
this Saturday 29th April kick off 2.30pm.
His first try was about strength as he drove through 3 would be tacklers
to force his way over his second and Rylands last was a poachers effort as
he intercepted a pass and raced 50 metres unopposed to the line, in between
Forsters brace there were two tries for Man of the Match Tony Berry and 1
apiece for Jamie Evans, Danny Hoyland, Ian Ward, Andy Pucill, Chris Clayson,
Peter Leonard, and Chris Forster who also landed 8 conversions as Rylands
produced some exhilarating rugby in their best performance of the season
so far.

RYLANDS AT THE DOUBLE
Rylands ARLFC completed the Northwest Counties league and cup double at Widnes
St Maries on Tuesday by defeating Widnes Moorfield 23-6 in front of a large
partisan local crowd.
Danny Hoyland silenced the locals with the first try on 8 minutes after a
precision kick to the corner by Chris Forster. Moorfield responded with a
converted try to lead 6-4 but it was short lived as Rylands restored their
lead immediately when Andy Pucill crashed through 3 would be tacklers after
great work from Andy Smith and Paul Flannery to give Rylands an 8-6 advantage.
Rylands began to express themselves in the backline as the forwards gained
the initiative with centre Neil Evans and full back Carl Lloyd taking advantage
to set up a try for wingman Jamie Evans, Chris Forster hit the post with
the conversion attempt but Rylands led 12-6 at the break.
Bone crunching defence was on show from both sides but the Rylands kicking
game was far superior and it was Chris Forster again with the kick that created
the second try for flying winger Hoyland 10 minutes into the second half,
Forster?s conversion gave Rylands an 18-6 lead.
Moorfield began to lose their discipline as Rylands took a stranglehold on
the game with Man of the Match Andy Pucill leading the way supported well
by all his team mates as the game threatened to boil over. Peter Leonard
knocked over a drop goal to extend the Rylands lead then they saved the best
till last as a sweeping move involving all the back division resulted in
Danny Hoyland going over in the corner to claim his hat trick and complete
a magnificent performance from the Gorsey Laners.

Leigh Miners Champions Challenge Cup

Rylands 16 v Leigh East 32

Rylands failed to reach the semi-finals of the Champions Challenge but pushed
NCL 1 side and current Holders Leigh East all the way before succumbing in
the last quarter of the game.
Rylands opened the scoring when Mark Forster collected a shrewd kick from
son Chris Forster and knocked off three would be tacklers to score in the
corner. Rylands got there hits in early with Andy Pucill, Phil Stephens and
Ian Ward to the fore which disrupted the East attack and it was no surprise
that Rylands extended their lead on the half hour mark as Chris Forster ghosted
in by the sticks for a deserved try which he converted to give Rylands a
10-0 lead.
On the stroke of half time Leigh got a converted try to narrow the deficit
to 4 points after a dubious penalty was awarded to them in the Rylands twenty.
The start of the second half saw more controversy as Danny Hoyland had the
ball stolen in a 2 on 1 tackle and as Rylands stood still waiting for the
whistle Easts played on and scored a converted try to take the lead for the
first time.
As decisions continued to go against the Rylands side, they lost their shape
and composure and Easts took advantage stretching out to a 32-12 lead. Rylands
kept battling away and they had the last word when Andy Pucill forced his
way over and Chris Forster converted to give a 32-16 final scoreline which
somewhat flattered the victors. .

Rylands A 2005 -06.
Rylands A 0 v Widnes St. Maries 56

Rylands A met a very strong St Maries for the first game of the 2005/2006 season. For the first 20 minutes Rylands defended strongly but eventually the superior strength and hard running of St Maries took its toll and by half time the score was 26 - 0 to St Maries. Rylands continued to battle and all 15 Rylands players gave 110%. Eventually St Maries ran out the winners by 56 points to 0. Special mentions should go to Dave Todd, Daniel Clayson on his debut and Jonathon Smith.

Rylands Man of the Match was Paul Flannery.

Golborne A 30 - 6 Rylands A.

Rylands A gave an encouraging display against a rejuvenated Golborne club,
but a slack 10 minute spell either side of HT saw the home side run in 4
tries. Mike Lee scored the Rylands consolation try and Jonathan Smith took
the Man of the Match award

Latchford A 10 - 44 Rylands A .

After an error strewn first half by both sides Rylands held a narrow 10-6. Advantage thanks to tries from Mickey Twiss and Dave Todd. A few words of wisdom from coach Tex Regan saw Rylands take complete control in the second half. Mike Lee and Dave Todd helped themselves to 3 tries each. Alan Brinksman also touched down and with MAN OF THE MATCH Jonathon Smith kicking 5 goals Rylands ran out 44-10 winners.

Langworthy A 16 -36 Rylands A

In an almost error free opening half Rylands raced into a 20-6 lead thanks to

Rylands eased off in the 2nd period but further tries from 'FAIFILLI' Smith, Andy Peece and a second for the hard working Jay Murray saw Rylands home comfortably. Dave Todd took the MAN OF THE MATCH Award with Darren Murray and Jeff Robinson also impressing.

Rylands A 35 v 18 Bank Quay Bulls A

The guile of half backs Chris Forster and Rob Holmes guided Rylands to a deserved victory in a hard fought local derby. The power and strength of the Bank Quay forwards was to the fore early in the game but Rylands stemmed the flow with some terric defence in particular from Darren Murray and Dave Todd allowing Rylands to show their class with ball in hand tries were scored by Kyle Hillman 2, Jonathan Smith 2, Jeff Robinson, Andy Simpson and Chris Forster who also landed 5 kicks.

Saddleworth A 12 v Rylands A 40

A slow start by Rylands allowed their hosts to open up an 8-0 advantage but
Chris Forster and Danny Hoyland went in for tries both converted by Forster
to give Rylands a 12-8 lead. Saddleworth levelled before Anthony Poole ghosted
over and Forster converted to give Rylands an 18-12 half time lead.
The introduction of Danny Forster on open age debut at hooker gave Rylands
much needed speed at the play the ball and Andy Brown took advantage scoring
a brace of tries Danny Hoyland went in for his second and Alan Brinksman
finished the scoring after good work from Andy Peace. Chris Forster finished
with 6 conversions from 7 attempts. There was good performances from Dave
Todd, Jonny Walker and debutant John Morris in his first game for 10 seasons.

NORTHWEST COUNTIES CHALLENGE CUP SEMI-FINAL
RYLANDS 37 v LATCHFORD 16
Rylands progressed to the Northwest Counties Challenge Cup Final with a hard
fought victory over local rivals Latchford
It was Latchford who started the stronger with a John Williams try and two
Gavin Bishop goals , but Rylands responded immediately with tries from Dave
Todd and Ian Ward both converted by Chris Forster who also added a drop goal
to give Rylands a 13-8 lead. Latchford came back to within a point with an
unconverted try from Rowlinson to give a half time score of 13-12
Aggressive defence was on show from both sides with some bone crunching hits
entertaining the large crowd, until a loose kick from Latchford was seized
upon by Rylands wingman Danny Hoyland who sped 60 meters to touch down under
the posts, again Latchford came back into it with an Andy Dean try to make
the scoreline 19-16 with twenty minutes to go.
The last quarter of the game was all Rylands though as 17 year old Chris
Forster took the game by the scruff of the neck scoring two solo tries passed
a tiring Latchford defence and as the game slipped away from Latchford they
lost their discipline having 3 players sent to the sin bin in the final minutes
Mike Lee wrapped things up for Rylands with a try in the last minute and
Forster landed his 6th goal to give Rylands an emphatic 37-16 victory
Best for Rylands Chris Forster, Dave Todd, Jonny Walker and Carl Lloyd, while
Andy James John Williams and Gavin Bishop were best for Latchford.
